HCWC Wrestling Camp

We will be having our “Advanced Wrestling Camp” again this year at Pisgah HS. The dates are June 27-July 1, and the times will be from 5:30-9:00 p.m. every evening.

We have an outstanding group of clinicians coming: (1) Coach Jerry Winterton from Cary HS – Hall of Fame wrestling coach, 22 state championships, 2-time National HS Wrestling Coach of the Year (2) Coach Eddie Clark from Newton-Conover HS – former Appalachian State wrestler, NC state champion, coach of perennial powerhouse team at Newton-Conover (3) Coach Mike Koob - NY state champion (you can’t imagine how great an accomplishment that is), former NC State University wrestler and NCAA tournament qualifier, currently serving as the coach at TC Roberson HS, one of the top programs in the western part of the state.

WRESTLING CLINIC THIS SATURDAY @ TC ROBERSON HS

I was contacted this evening (Monday) by Mike Koob, who is one of the clinicians coming to our camp in June, telling me that former N.C. State University Head Wrestling Coach, Bob Guzzo, will conduct a clinic this Saturday, April 23, at TC Roberson High School. The clinic will be from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., and the cost is only $10 per wrestler – coaches can attend for free. The clinic is OPEN TO ALL WRESTLERS, GRADE 6-12.

Coach Koob wrestled for Coach Guzzo at NCSU, and Coach Guzzo has been a highly sought after clinician for years. I strongly encourage anyone who is serious about improving your wrestling skills to take advantage of this great opportunity. I’m sure we can work out some car pooling if that will help some of you, and if the $10 is a problem, I can help with that, as well.

NO PRACTICE THIS WEEK (April 18-22)

Everyone enjoy your week of Spring Break! We will come back together on Monday, April 25, at Tuscola. See you then.

PRACTICE TONIGHT @ PISGAH (6:00-8:00)

Don’t forget that there is an Academic Awards Banquet taking place tonight at Pisgah. It will not affect our ability to use the auxiliary gym, but there will probably be a lot of cars in the parking lot, so you may have to look for a space.

My plan for tonight is to continue to work on the “Pipe” finish for the high single, as well as the Navy Stack / Bottom Leg Cradle finish. We will also go back and work on legs again tonight, and learn a new Tilt that comes out of the Crossbody Ride.

Our younger wrestlers will work on a couple of breakdowns and the Wrist & Half Nelson pinning combination.

THIS WILL BE OUR LAST PRACTICE UNTIL MONDAY, APRIL 25, AT TUSCOLA.

PRACTICE MONDAY @ THS (6:00-8:00 P.M.)

Remember, we are focusing on folkstyle (i.e., “regular”) wrestling from now until the end of the season.

We will practice Monday and Thursday this week, and there will be NO PRACTICES the week of Spring Break.

PRACTICE @ PISGAH HS on THURSDAY (4/7/11)

I have to apologize to everyone for missing the last two practices. I have had some personal issues I have had to deal with, and I hope everyone can be understanding. I plan to be at practice Thursday, however.

We have reached the stage in the USAW tournament season when all of the tournaments are strictly freestyle and greco. Also, there are no more tournaments scheduled that will be closer than Rutherfordton (a little further than Mitchell HS). Given these two facts, I think it will be best for us to concentrate on “regular” (i.e., folkstyle) wrestling in our practices for the rest of the club season.

I am still checking on the possibility of hosting a tournament here in Haywood County this spring. But if we do so, we will probably have to do it outside the USAW umbrella, and that makes everything a lot more complicated. It also makes it much more expensive to put on a tournament, because HCWC would have to contract for additional liability insurance, and we would have to find (and pay for) our own officials and awards (medals and/or ribbons). These costs would have to be passed on to the participants in an entry fee that would probably have to be $15-20, and that might be too much for most people to pay for a small tournament. Anyway, I’m still checking on it, but nothing is solid yet, by any means.

Highland Freestyle Challenge @ Mitchell HS this Saturday

You can still pre-register HERE for the Highland Freestyle Challenge. They are keeping the pre-registration link open until something like 4:30 p.m. tomorrow. There is no penalty for registering and then not showing up ($10 registration fee is paid at the Mitchell HS gym Saturday morning), but if you simply show up Saturday, you will be charged a $20 registration fee.

Sorry about missing practice tonight. I had some family stuff going on, and I appreciate the help of all the other coaches in getting our practice in.

Warhorse Stampede RESULTS (Practice Monday @ Tuscola)

We had a lot of good participation (24 wrestlers) at the Warhorse Stampede this weekend, and the competition was pretty tough overall, especially in a few weight classes. Below are the results for our wrestlers. Also, the following link will take you to the “trackwrestling” site, where you can see the individual brackets for everyone – just type in “Warhorse Stampede” where it asks for the event name, follow the links for either “Greco” or “Freestyle/Modified Folkstyle,” and use the menu on the left side of the page to see brackets, team results, etc.

Don’t forget: PRACTICE MONDAY @ THS (6:00-8:00). I saw a number of things we need to work on, especially for our younger wrestlers, and with all the USAW tournaments being “freestyle” from now on, anyone who plans to go to more tournaments needs to get more familiar with the rules and work on some freestyle moves. Let me mention, as well, that PRACTICE TIME IS IMPORTANT, and if you want to be a better wrestler you need to attend as many practices as possible. Going to tournaments is great, and it gives you the chance to compete, but practice is where you try new moves or you improve old moves. COME TO PRACTICE, AND TAKE IT SERIOUSLY! We have some good coaches who are volunteering their time to help you get better, so don’t waste their time or yours.

By the way, we are also looking into hosting our own tournament here in Haywood County that we will probably set up as being a “standard folkstyle” tournament (i.e., regular high school/middle school rules). But it is definitely in the “construction stage” right now, and there will be a lot of steps necessary before we can say it is a definite. Stay tuned, and of course, I will keep the wrestlers informed about what’s happening at our practices.
